(3-minute read.)
What were their names?
Names.
Texas Governor Abbot had more concertina/razor wire installed by his private army in the water and along his southern border.[1] Razor wire is nasty stuff, especially so when installed in conjunction with a floating barrier.[2] Some of the razor wire is underwater. Razor wire is designed to slash people open and it is doing its job.[3] Razor wire does not discriminate between men, women and children and unaccompanied children immigrants are on the rise.[4]
A friend made a comment regarding Laken Riley, the woman that was killed by an illegal immigrant.[5]
“Has anyone ever heard the names of the woman and her two children who drowned having been caught in the wire strung in the Rio Grande by Texas politicians? Someone knew their name. Someone loved them.”
In doing some research I found their names.[6] It seems important that we know them.
Victerma de la Sancha Cerros, 33, her daughter, Yorlei Rubi, 10, and son, Jonathan Agustín, 8.
Welcome to America.
Unknown.
Death is too often a traveling companion of immigrants in their journey. How many migrants die along the way? How many die crossing the Rio Grande? How many die at the hands of the cartels? How many die in the desert? How many names will never be known? How many will never hear from their loved ones again or even know what happened to them?
Thousands have died.[7] Since 1998, there have been over 8,000 documented deaths.[8] Immigrants will die today. More immigrants will die tomorrow. Thousands more will die. They will drown. They will die in the backs of trailers. They will die in the desert. They will die from heat and from exposure. They will die from lack of water. They will die from violence. They will die because they were abandoned by smugglers. They will die falling from border walls. And these are just the deaths that we know about. At times all that is found are remains.
Yet immigrants keep coming. They come from other countries for a variety of reasons. Escaping something is a common theme. Political oppression. Poverty. Violence. Economics. Circumstances that make them willing to undergo hardship and dangerous conditions. They often have to dodge cartels and others that would bring them harm.
Unfortunately, that includes Americans.
Broken records.
2023 has the distinction of having the most immigrants on record.[9]
Immigrants dying is a MAGA policy. It’s also MAGA policy to blame President Biden for the immigrant deaths while they refuse to pass legislation that they negotiated to help deal with the immigration that they say is a crisis.
Why? Why is the MAGA Party of Trump doing this? So they can campaign on the very issue that they are sustaining. Keep in mind that when Trump was President he failed to fix the border issue even while he had the support of Congress for two years. Brown people and the border will always be an issue for MAGA. It’s a bread-and-butter campaign issue for them. It’s their always issue.
Immigration is a bipartisan policy issue that has gone unresolved for decades. Decades. Through Republican and Democrat administrations. It’s going to take years to resolve and that’s only if there is continuity in administrations in dealing with immigration when different political parties are in charge. What’s more it won’t be “fixed” with walls, watch towers, armed guards, high tech monitoring and minefields. A future possibility if MAGA wins. It’s like the MAGA solution to gun violence being that we need more guns. MAGA is in search of a final solution.
What’s missing from all the failed solutions so far besides practicality and adequate resources?
Humanity.
