Cole Brauer did it!

(1.5-minute read)

This will be different from my usual posts.

Solo!

A young woman named Cole Brauer just finished sailing solo around the world in the Global Solo Challenge.[1]  She’s the first American woman to do that.  Only 186 people have accomplished this feat and she was the only woman in the race.  She sailed around 30,000 miles in a 40-foot sailboat.  She left A Coruña, Spain October 29, 2023, and finished 2nd March 7, 2024.  She came in second out of a field of 16 experienced sailors.  She’s 29 years old, 5’2” and weighs 100 pounds.  She was rejected from participating in another global race for being too short.

I followed her adventure on Instagram along with 450,000 other people.  It was incredible to watch.  She faced down so much adversity.  Exhaustion.  Fatigue.  Cracked rib from when she was bounced around inside below deck.  No heat.  Had to do her own IV when she got sick and dehydrated.  Had to repair her own equipment when it broke.  There was one point in her journey, point Nemo, where the closest humans were the ones on the International Space Station (250 miles high).[2]  There were no people within 1,000 miles in any other direction.

In addition to all the above she also posted video updates on social media and signed off with the shaka hand gesture.[3]  Now, she is always quick to point out that she had an entire support team backing her.  They monitored her every step of the way.  When something would break they would look up a fix that she could do with what she had on board.  She shared her journey and a positive attitude.  It was an absolute joy watching her.

Here’s a link to her web site.

            From her website.

In a world where hard work knows no gender, Cole Brauer stands as an advocate for equality. Her values rest on the foundation of recognizing and appreciating every individual’s efforts and skills, regardless of their background or gender.

She’s such an inspiration.
