A word
Okay, perhaps more than a word about Tuesday’s presidential debate.
The Democrats have hyped the debate pretty strongly, promoting the idea that Vice President Kamala Harris will clean the floor with the rapist Trump. Sometimes quite colorful expressions have been used. Memes can be fun to read. They can also be misleading regarding reasonable expectations.
Now, I don’t want to throw a wet rag on people’s joy but it needs to be noted that the rapist Trump has done pretty well in previous debates and he did sink President Biden’s reelection bid. For one thing, Trump doesn’t actually debate. He spews. He gets in his talking points, aka lies, while name calling and ridiculing. All in an hour’s work. He practices his rants every day for hours on end! MAGA eats it up.

Fred Astaire was an excellent dancer. As his dance partner Ginger Rodgers did everything he did backwards, while wearing high heels.
VP Harris has to do better than getting in her talking points. She’s going to be held to a different standard. Let’s face it, Trump’s bar is way lower than hers. Witness Trump’s over 300-word nonanswer response to a question about education. His response was gibberish. Corporate media was calling for Biden to step down and/or resign from office after his relatively poor performance at their debate. Creepy old rapist weird Trump gets a pass or, as I read in a headline, they sanewash what Trump supposedly said or did or didn’t say or might have said but didn’t actually say. Simply put, corporate media isn’t doing their job.[1] Well, unless their job is to get Trump elected.
The last time that I watched Harris debate was when she debated Mike Pence. She was good. The sounds bites that her team used after the debates in 2020 were effective.[2] She’s got more experience under her belt now.
What could make a difference is Trump’s lack of self-control. Harris could bait him or easily trigger him even unintentionally. She could simply use the word weird after some of Trump’s lie-spewing, or laugh at something he says. Either of those things could drive him over the edge. The strategy showcased at the Democratic National Convention by various of the speakers and his reactions prove that this is a winning strategy.
If Harris does well she could pick up a percentage point in the polling spread.
