Lifestyles of the poor and anonymous.

Poverty

What does it mean to be living in poverty?

What is the poverty line; that line that differentiates between living in poverty and just being poor?

Well the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for 2020 for a family of 2 is $17,240. For a family of 4 it’s $20,200.

In 2000 there was a low of 31.5 million after a 7 year drop from a high of 39 million in 1993. In 1990 there were over 33 million below the poverty line. (Add another 20 million give or take a few above this line to those that are just “poor” in any given year.)

As best I can determine from ALL of the various information available the number of people living in poverty had been dropping since 2014. There were approximately 46.6 million people living in poverty then. That run is over.

For the last 30 years we’ve had at least 31 million people living in poverty on a yearly basis. 31,000,000. That’s the number of people living below the FPL. The number of people at the FPL in 2019 was just shy of 34 million.

These aren’t small numbers.

Crackers

None of this really addresses the question that this started off with though. What does it mean to be living in poverty? Again we’re talking about poverty not about being poor (low income).

I’ve been poor both as an adult and as a child but we always had food to eat. We were never impoverished. Not poor now though. Caught some breaks unlike so many others and made it to a comfortable retirement. (Union wages and benefits.)

My first wife remembered growing up when the only food that they had in the house to eat was crackers. Her Dad growing up had to wear a dress to school for a time because that was all the clothes his parents had and his pants were worn completely out. They literally couldn’t afford to buy clothes.

That was poverty.

Then there’s homeless poverty. Not just individuals either but entire families. There’s poverty that spans generations; one hopeless generation followed by another. Year in. Year out. No way out. There’s inner city poverty. There’s geographical poverty like what exists in the Appalachia region.

Who are these people? Do you see them in your day to day life? Are they waiting on you? Are they serving your food? Are they working to bring your food to the table? Are they cleaning? Are they working the hard physical labor jobs at the bottom? Are they working in meat packing plants, driving cabs, cooking food, waiting tables, picking crops, cleaning rooms? Yes is the answer. All these and more. They also populate the medical field.

Poverty

It doesn’t make any difference whether Republicans or Democrats are in charge. The numbers may go up a little or down a little but things stay the same for tens of millions living in poverty and tens of millions more that are poor. It’s little wonder that many or most of them don’t vote. Why should they participate in a process that makes no difference in their lives?

I stayed away for the most part about the state of poverty in 2020. We have a few million additions to the ranks of the poor and desperate because of the pandemic. Millions who have had their lives destroyed for all practical purposes. How do they build back to subsistence living? What happens when there’s nothing left to lose?

Capitalism has failed

Thirty million people living in poverty decade after decade is not a success story for the current oldest Constitutional democracy. It doesn’t speak well for our system of government or the two main parties.

The rich, however, have done great under this system. They have done it on the backs of the poor and the shrinking middle class. The poor do the grunt work of society. They handle the ugly stuff, the work that others don’t want to stoop to do. They will accept desperation wages. They are what have been known as “essential workers” during the pandemic.

What does it mean to be living in poverty during a pandemic?

They will die in greater numbers.

Election fraud discovered!

Lawyers R Us.

Trump’s band of gas-bag lawyers have turned up election fraud. They were standing in a circular firing squad at the time of their discovery: the only fraud belongs to them. They were trying to overturn a legal election where there was NO widespread fraud other than theirs in trying to reverse the vote of “We the People”. Those words are enshrined in the Constitution for a reason.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) even asked the United States Supreme Court to overturn Biden’s wins in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Georgia. Just the swing states that Trump lost, mind you.

Republicans took their assault all the way to the United States Supreme Court (USSC) where Trump expected to have his Supremes install him as President. After all, they are HIS Supremes.

They didn’t.

Coup attempt

On one side the United States of America, the world’s oldest constitutional democracy. On the other—the country and denizens of Trumplandia where the incredible powers of gullibility along with obliviousness have been harnessed. That and the recycled intestinal gas from the leaking lawyers that can’t file straight.

What does need to be treated seriously is that the President of the United States tried to overthrow the vote of the people and had the almost complete support of the Republican Party congressional representatives who are too afraid to speak out about the Commander in Tyrant because they’re afraid that his racist violent supporters won’t vote for them next time.

In addition to actively trying to get Republican state legislatures to “fix” the vote, Trump, along with his supporters, encouraged violence against not only Congress but against state governments as well. His supporters in Congress also voted to overturn the Electoral College vote. Other Trump supporters encourage seceding from the United States. This, in addition to their attack on the Capitol, is also known as sedition.

In simple terms, Trump tried to overthrow and take over the government through extra legal means as well as through violent actions taken against Representatives, Senators and their support staff, including police. In other countries we call actions like that an attempted coup. We just haven’t seen one here before this country.

Trump and his entourage encouraged violence and armed Trump supporters turned up. The MAGA insurrectionists also turned up at the homes of officials that stood up to Trump by doing their jobs and upholding a legal vote of “We the People.” But as it turns outs.

It was a hoax.

Writing off Death

Hans Holbein’s Dance of Death (1523–5)

(5 minute read)

Conservative Republican Evangelical Messaging:

            People die.

People are dying all the time anyway.

People die from heart disease, cancer, regular disease, accidents, mayhem of all sorts, old age, being in the wrong place at the wrong time, food poisoning and just because. Covid-19 is just something else that people are dying from. Not that big of a deal really. Sure it’s bad but so is heart disease.

Thoughts and prayers.

Perspective.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has been horrible. No disputing that. However, I grow weary of the daily scorecards of 2020 deaths attributed to Covid that make perspective difficult. Consider these CDC stats on causes of death during 2018…”

 Wearisome.

I lifted the above quote from a meme that has been circulating around in conservative postings. I have seen it posted and shared in a number of places. I haven’t bothered checking the information presented as to having the correct number of deaths attributed to various categories.

Hearing about Covid deaths is “wearisome” to them. People share those feelings in order to minimize what’s taking place. That way they can ignore the fact that the President knew SARS-CoV-2 was deadly and lied to the nation. They can ignore that he has and still does encourage practices that kill people. He got it and lived. Now he’s a one man super-spreading show.

At the top of the list is 655,381 people dying from heart disease. Then the author talks about all the other ways people die and supplies the number for each. So really, is adding an additional half million to the normal death tally really all that much of a big deal? The majority of these new deaths are going to be old people and they don’t have all that many years left anyway. Sure there’ll be some people die from all the other age groups and ethnicities but that’s bound to happen. They’re…

Just collateral damage.

Revealed

What’s missing from the “perspective” narrative? (Besides humanity.)

  • A shattered economy.
  • The millions that will have their physical lives forever compromised from Covid-19.
  • The millions of people that have been put out of work. This is in addition to the 30 million plus that were living in poverty before the pandemic struck.
  • All the families that have lost BOTH parents to Covid-19.
  • Millions more now without health insurance during a pandemic.
  • Homes lost.
  • Men, women and children hungry, some for the first time in their lives.
  • All those that have lost EVERYTHING!

Wearisome.

292,747

Clearly they needed this “perspective” during WWII.

            Why?

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 has now exceeded the number of American combat casualties from WWII. (292,747) That took almost 4 years. When casualties were reported from the front lines people weren’t saying that they were tired of hearing about dead people and that it was wearisome. There weren’t irrational individuals walking neighborhoods or calling people up telling them to maintain their perspective that there were worse things than our men and women dying in combat.

AND that’s only .39% of the total population then. Yet people made a big deal out of it.

The “conservative” Retrumplicans and evangelicals of today are cut from a different cloth.

Retrumplicans made it possible to exceed that total in less than a year! AND we’re coming in at a 1.5% or higher mortality rate!

Winning!

405,399

That’s the number of total American deaths from WWII. Armed forces personnel were dying from natural causes, accidents, etc. then as well. (Yes, people died from other things then too. Amazing isn’t it?) Retrumplicans will make it possible to beat this number as well!

More winning!

 Caring and sharing.

It’s easy to see why keeping things in perspective is difficult for some people. (NOT really.)  I read that what the pandemic has also done is revealed the true nature of people. The callous disregard for human life by so many has been a real eye-opening experience all over the country.

How many deaths and lives destroyed will it take to provide adequate perspective to Conservative Evangelical Republican Trump supporters? How many have to die before they go against their lying Ducé and start wearing masks, participating in contact tracing and get vaccinated? What has to happen to get any of them to stop killing people? Their refusal to believe what’s happening, mask up and maintain physical distancing has resulted in a couple of hundred thousand needless deaths. That is NOT the fault of the Chinese that they like to race bait. Conservative Republicans, Evangelicals and Trump supporters are the ones responsible.

They own that.
