Short Takes Draft, 4/6/2023

(2.5-minute read)

High and mighty

Oooooo, it turns out that Supreme Justice Clarence Thomas and his wife Ginny have been groomed for years by billionaire real estate magnate and Republican donor Harlan Crow.[1]  Just one trip to Indonesia in 2019 funded by the billionaire would have cost $500,000 since a yacht and plane were involved.

Kill gays.  It’s the law.

Evangelicals have been really busy in Africa spreading the gospel about gays.  Uganda made it a crime punishable by death.[2]  Evangelicals use the same code words there as they do here.  That they’re pedophiles grooming children.

MAGAs China Partnership.

Are conservatives really that hostile to China?  Utah isn’t.  Utah loves them some Chinese government and Grandpa Xi.[3]  So do Jared and Ivanka Kushner, to the tune of a few hundred million.[4]  Missouri sold a lot of land to the Chinese, owned primarily by Smithfield Foods that they also bought.[5]  Dang!  I like their sausage too!  It’s only 46,000 acres that the Chinese own so not a big deal depending upon how one views that many acres.  BTW this when conservatives line up to support capitalism.  Overall, in the United States 384,000 acres are owned by the Chinese.[6]

Abortion trafficking

Ever heard of that?  It’s a new law that MAGA fascists have come up with in Idaho.[7]  Soon it’ll be turning up at other Red states.  It makes it illegal to assist a minor that needs access to abortion care in another state.  It will be a crime punishable by 2 – 5 years in prison.  Red states are going to need to get busy building more prisons in order to hold all the people that they want to throw in jail.  Remember that for MAGA fascists Democrats are pedophiles.[8]  Yes, you read that correctly.

Stochastic terrorism

The above title is another new term that I’ve heard recently.  What does it mean?  Here’s a quote from the article:  “Dehumanizing and vilifying a person or group of people can provoke what scholars and law enforcement officials call stochastic terrorism, in which ideologically driven hate speech increases the likelihood that people will violently and unpredictably attack the targets of vicious claims.”[9]

The problem in today’s culture wars is that the same definitions and phrases are being used by all the sides involved.  So it comes down to actions like what happened on January 6th that are taking place along with all the suppressive laws that are being enacted.  Encouraging people to take up arms against the government is another example.  That’s also happening all over the nation.
