Time will tell.
So, is Trump alleged to have committed a crime or several crimes yet?[1] Did he allegedly take government documents that he was allegedly supposed to have? Has he committed crimes that he can’t talk his way out of? Will Trump’s MAGA Heads commit acts of violence if he’s indicted? If you can’t do the time,
Don’t do the crime!
Power Corrupts
For the vast majority of his life from the time he punched his music teacher and gave him a black eye, Trump has done whatever he wanted and gotten away with it.[2] Now, here’s where it gets tricky. Trump also denies that he punched his music teacher so should I say that Trump allegedly punched his music teacher?[3] Since the story originated from him I’m going to skip the alleged part, if we can believe anything that he said or wrote. We also have the option to believe that he in fact did punch his music teacher and did not punch his music teacher. This is the option and belief system that MAGA Heads choose to follow. We can also accept that the man is and always has been a narcissistic bully.
Getting elected President only made him worse.
Let’s make a deal!
What does the government of a democratic republic do with an alleged criminal ex-president? Does he get a pardon to be let off the hook like President Ford did for ex-President Tricky Dick Nixon?[4] They belonged to the same party. Should Trump get the opportunity to plea bargain like President Clinton did?[5] So far ex-Presidents and one Vice President, Agnew, have received escape clauses when it comes to their illegal acts.[6] Should Trump get a pass?
Well, technically those mentioned above did not get a pass. They received hand slaps. Nixon resigned before he was impeached. Agnew resigned and took a plea bargain. Clinton was impeached but found not guilty in the Senate but ended up taking a plea bargain the day before he left office. But where Clinton was a master at manipulating the legal system, Trump is a master at delaying the legal system.
There’s a huge difference in the crimes that they committed. When Clinton was impeached a lot of high-sounding legal language and oratory was used to avoid saying that he was impeached for lying under oath about receiving a blowjob. I told my Republican Representative at the time that there wasn’t any way that the Senate was going to vote to convict him for lying about that. They didn’t vote to convict.
Trump has taken us to new heights of uncharted territory. He tried to overthrow our government by staging a coup. Allegedly. For the first time in our nation’s history there was not a peaceful transfer of power because of him. Allegedly. He stole money from his MAGA Heads. Allegedly. He stole classified information. Allegedly. He lied about having it. Allegedly. That’s the short list.
Allegedly.
Door number 3!
The question du jour or rather questions du jour are will the DOJ charge Trump on any number of crimes that he’s being investigated for committing a number of serious crimes up to and including stealing some the most sensitive classified documents in our nation, and committing treason? Will President Biden pardon him before things come to a head, for the good of the nation? (I really hope not.)
In the meantime, Trump seems to be intent on painting himself into a corner with his own lawyering regarding the classified documents that he stole. Had he just stolen government papers there would be less public support for the investigations to continue and a more serious outcome. He is actually making his position worse with his ongoing legal obstruction to the DOJ doing their investigation. Well, that and the fact that he won’t shut up.
OMG! I forgot to say allegedly!
I’ll just have to go on with this. I’m in too deep now. But really, aren’t we waaaaay past the alleged part? At this point do we still need to ease people into the fact that our former President is obviously guilty as hell and a criminal? He’s a criminal by his own previously expressed standards.[7] IF he’s found guilty he’ll try to incite another insurrection.
Allegedly.
