God sent a plague

            Why do I bring up this topic now? We’re overdue for another one.

Live stupid. Die stupid.

            God sent a plague during the last year of the first Trump Administration.  White Christian Nationalists seem to forget that when they talk about their Orange Jesus being the “Chosen One.” Wonder what he has in store for us now with the anti-Christ in charge again?

It was a serious plague too. People are still dying from it. The most recent statistic is that over a million Americans have died since the plague struck.[1] Currently 90% of people hospitalized because of Covid are unvaccinated.[2] That’s 9 out of every 10 people. Funny how science denying antivaxxers run to the hospital for science-based care. Evidently their Ivermectin isn’t working out well for them. Fortunately Covid ended up with a mortality rate of around 1%. Though that is of little consolation to those that died.

How will we fare with the next plague/epidemic? We’ll do a lot worse next time around than we did with Trump the first time. Especially if the next pathogen has a higher mortality rate. Covid with a 1% mortality rate almost collapsed our health care system. Science and sound medical practice will go out the window. Head first. MAGAts will blame the Dems.

That’s a given.

An answer in search of the right question.

            How did we get here? Good question.

            First off MAGAts don’t believe that anyone, especially the government, can tell them what to do except for their idiot savant Dear Leader. They need an authoritarian to manage their day. An authoritarian that believes like they do.

They are conspiracy driven. They look for conspiracies. They make up conspiracies. They need conspiracies to explain what they are unable to understand. They reject intellect. Intellect confuses them. That’s why they worship a man like Trump. He talks like they do. He acts like they do. They share his lack of morality. The truth is immaterial to MAGAts. It confuses them as well when it conflicts with the things that they want to believe.

This brings us to Jenny McCarthy.

If we look back in time Jenny McCarthy practically single-handedly kick-started the anti-vaccine movement.[3] McCarthy claimed without any scientific evidence whatsoever that vaccines, including the MMR vaccine, caused her son’s autism. How did she reach this conclusion? She had a “bad feeling.”[4] She had an answer already as to what caused her son’s autism and went looking for people that agreed with her answer. She now claims that she’s pro-safe vaccine. The problem is that when anti-vaxxers get questioned you discover that they don’t think that any vaccine is safe. And people die.

Innocents die.

Back to the next one.

Even prior to Covid, thousands have died including children, because of the anti-vaccine movement. If you count Covid-19 deaths of people that died because they wouldn’t take the vaccine the number of dead easily goes into the hundreds of thousands. There’s no way to put an exact high-end figure on it. To complicate matters even more there were coroners that wouldn’t list Covid as being the cause of death because the victim’s family requested them not to.[5]

            I was shopping in the pharmacy aisle at Walmart the other day and there was a young woman squatting down explaining germs to her two beautiful daughters. She was telling them not to go around touching things because people have germs on their hands and that’s how disease gets spread. I’m thinking to myself, “Go you young mom!” Then she says to her daughters “That’s why we don’t wear masks because we breathe our own germs right back in.” She was so close. And this is how generational ignorance continues. And this is why the next pandemic is going to be really bad.

            As far back as the 1300s people knew that quarantining and social distancing worked to save lives.[6] THE 1300s, people! They knew that they had to work together for the common good and welfare of others. The Black death caused an estimated 25 million deaths.[7] That was roughly half the population of Europe then. Entire villages and families were wiped out.

            When a pandemic like Covid or the black death hits there needs to be a unified response NOT 50 different ones. It takes people acting in concert for the good of everyone. The anti-science people will behave exactly as they did last time. They’re always around. They were around during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918-1919. They will spread the disease. Roughly a third of the world’s population caught the flu. Millions died then too.[8]

When they get sick, they will do just as they’re doing now. They will infect others to strive for what they call “herd immunity” and make the toll even higher. Then they will go to hospitals and demand treatment. Save me! Save me! They will hamper any government response but will still be outraged by whatever the government does or does not do. They will always blame the government rather than themselves.

It’s what they do.
