Short Takes, 2/12/2024

(2.84-minute read.)

How about that Super Bowl?!

Well, that was quite the football game.  My wife knows nothing about football and she knows more than me.  Still, I enjoyed the game. At least the parts that I watched.  I couldn’t pass up a chance to see 25 seconds of Taylor Swift.  A surprise for me was seeing Travis Kelce scream into Coach Reid’s face and not get benched for even longer.  But as it turned out, they needed his 90-some yards.

I should probably mention the Jesus Super bowl ads.  $7 million each.  Funded by religious conservatives that oppose a woman’s right over her own body, hate gay people and support criminalizing homosexual behavior.[1]  They say they don’t.

They do.

Toast

We have the technological ability to communicate with a tiny space probe that is 15 BILLION miles away AND its technology from a couple of decades ago.  Why oh why can’t we produce a toaster that toasts both sides evenly?  WHY?

What kind of toast does your toaster make?  Is one side toasted consistently better than the other side?  After years of dealing with the toasting inconsistency of our current toaster I convinced my girlfriend that we needed a new toaster.  My wife agreed.  (Same person.)  After we did significant toaster research (And by “we” I mean my wife) we purchased a new toaster.  Upon its arrival I immediately plugged it in and tried it out.

Same damn problem.

Dodgeball?

On February 8th, 2024, the Supreme Court of the United States listened to the arguments regarding keeping Trump off the ballot in Colorado because he engaged in conduct prohibited by the 14th Amendment to our Constitution.[2]  While their decision has not yet been rendered, from the questions the justices asked it looks like the Supreme Court will probably reverse the lower court decision and keep the rapist Trump on the ballot.

The attorney representing Trump did an outstanding job.  His arguments were quite persuasive as were some of the questions from the justices.  That doesn’t mean I think they’re right.  SCOTUS questions from the justices largely ignored the main Constitutional issues.[3]

So, where does that leave the United States if the Supreme Court rules that the immoral rapist Trump that tried to stay in power after losing the election by overthrowing our government can stay on the ballot?  The question they’re ducking is: can a group of individuals try and overthrow our government and get away with it without any accountability and repercussions as provided by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment?[4]

The same place we are in now.

Degrees matter.

Welp, we’re there.  The world has hit the 1.5 degree increase in global warming aka climate change.  This is where MAGA Republicans try and use science to deny science.  There are a lot of factors involved in determining the impact that humans have on climate change other than just temperature but temps get the big coverage.  What do it mean?

It means a lot and way too much to get into here.  Essentially it means a lot more famine, death and destruction than usual.  And yes, we have had climate change in the past.  Science tells us that.  Science now tells us what’s coming our way and we’re already seeing it in real time just as science predicted.

It ain’t going to be pretty.
